I was putting a lot of miles on my car this weekend...
On Saturday, I went to Mt. Grosser Arber at the "Bavarian Forest" national park (or click here if you can read German). This is an amazingly beautiful area where nature is left to itself (no lumbering), and with lots of rare wildlife (wildcats, lynx, rare plants).
This time, though, I wanted to see the two lakes at Mt. Grosser Arber. Both are relics from the ice age and surrounded by virgin forest.
The Great Arber Lake (link only in GE) is the most visited lake in the region - which also means that there's way too many tourists there in high season. But at the moment everything's nice and quiet - and cold![]()
Yes, that's ice you see there!
The lake is 935 meters (3,070 ft) above sea level so it's bound to be cooler than lower-lying areas. For example, when I left my home (500 meters or 1,640 ft) at 9 a.m., we had 12°C. When I got to Mt. Arber about 3 hours later, the temperature had dropped to 6°C. ![]()
But I didn't spend too much time at Great Arber Lake, I wanted to move on to Little Arber Lake which I read was even more natural / mysterious / pretty, and not as overrun.
See my next post for that ![]()
